Moderate coffee drinking may reduce death risk

Drinking two to three cups of coffee daily may reduce your risk of death from heart disease, diabetes and suicide, researchers including those of Indian-origin have claimed. 

In the study, people who regularly drank moderate amounts of coffee daily - less than 5 cups per day - experienced a lower risk of deaths from cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, Type 2 diabetes and suicide. 
The benefit held true for drinking caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, suggesting it is not just the caffeine providing health perks but possibly the naturally occurring chemical compounds in the coffee beans. 

"Bioactive compounds in coffee reduce insulin resistance and systematic inflammation," said Ming Ding, the study's first author and doctoral student at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. 

"They might be responsible for the inverse association between coffee and mortality. However, more studies are needed to investigate the biological mechanisms producing these effects," said Ding. 

The findings are based on data from three large ongoing studies: 74,890 women in the Nurses' Health Study; 93,054 women in the Nurses' Health Study 2; and 40,557 men in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. 

Researchers assessed coffee drinking every four years using validated food questionnaires and followed participants for up to 30 years. During the follow-up period, 19,524 women and 12,432 men died from a range of causes. 

In general, people who frequently drank coffee were more likely to smoke and drink alcohol. To separate the effects of coffee from smoking, researchers repeated their analysis among never-smokers, and found that the protective benefits of coffee on deaths became even more evident. 

"Regular consumption of coffee can be included as part of a healthy, balanced diet," said senior author Frank Hu, a Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at Harvard. 

"However, certain populations such as pregnant women and children should be cautious about high caffeine intake from coffee or other beverages," said Hu. 

The study by researchers, including Ambika Satija and Shilpa N Bhupathiraju, both from Harvard, was not designed to show a direct cause and effect relationship between coffee consumption and dying from illness. So the findings should be interpreted with caution, researchers said. 

Previous studies found inconsistent associations between coffee drinking and risk of total and cause-specific death. The new study adds to the literature that moderate coffee consumption may confer health benefits.

India conducts secret test of submarine-launched K-4 nuclear-capable missile

Nuclear-capable ballistic missile K-4 was test-fired from nuclear submarine Arihant, both of which have been ingeniously developed.
In a major step towards completing India’s nuclear triad, nuclear-capable ballistic missile K-4 was test-fired from nuclear submarine Arihant, both of which have been ingeniously developed, officials said on April 13, 2016. Former Indian Navy chief Admiral Arun Prakash (retd) called it a “major step”, but said Arihant needs to be armed with a missile of inter-continental range, which is a missile with above 5,000 km range. The K-4 has a range of 3,500 km.
The test was conducted secretly last month and kept under wraps with the Defense Research and Development Organization refusing to comment on it officially. Admiral Arun Prakash called it a major step towards completing the nuclear triad. “It is a major step towards attaining inter-continental range deterrence to make full use of Arihant,” he told IANS. “We need a missile of about 5,500 km range, then it will enable the submarine to be anywhere in the Indian Ocean and still be a threat to the targets,” he said. “This is major step but not he ultimate target,” the former navy chief said. Sources told IANS that the test was conducted on March 31 from Arihant in the Bay of Bengal, and it was successful.
The DRDO was, however, tight-lipped over the test. The K-4 is part of the K-family of missiles, a series of submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM), named after former president and scientist A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. The missile can carry a warhead weighing up to 2 tonnes and is powered by solid rocket propellant. The missile was developed specifically for Arihant, as the nuclear capable Agni-III could not be compacted to fit in the submarine. Arihant has a 17 metre diameter hull. K-4, along with the smaller K-15 Sagarika, another ingeniously developed nuclear capable missile, will arm Arihant, the submarine, which will complete India’s nuclear triad. Arihant has four vertical launch tubes, which can carry 12 K-15 missiles or four larger K-4 missiles.

दुनिया का सबसे प्रसिद्ध इंस्टैंट मैसेजिंग एप WhatsApp एक बार फिर ठप पड़ गया है। द इंडिपेंडेंट की एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार व्हॉटसएप यूरोप और यूके समेत कई देशों में काम करना बंद कर दिया है। रिपोर्ट में बताया गया है कि एप पर मैसेज सेंडिंग और रिसीविंग सर्विस काफी देर तक ठप रही। शाम 6 बजे से व्हॉट्सएप करीब आधे घंटे के लिए ठप पड़ गया था।
व्हॉट्सएप की यह गड़बड़ी न सिर्फ यूरोपीय देशों में बल्कि साउथ अफ्रीका, मिडल ईस्ट और एशिया के कई देशों में हुई। गौरतलब के फेसबुक के इस एप को दुनियाभर में एक बिलियन से भी ज्यादा यूजर इस्तेमाल कर रहे हैं। यह कोई पहला ऐसा मौका नहीं है जब व्हॉट्सएप डाउन हुआ है, पिछले महीने भी भारत समेत दुनिया के कई देशों में व्हॉट्सएप की सर्विस कई घंटों के लिए बंद हुई थी।

हालांकि इस घटना के बाद व्हॉट्सएप के एक शीर्ष अधिकारी ने एप पर मैसेजिंग सर्विस के ठप पड़ने पर माफी मांगी और इस तरह की समस्या का समाधान खोजने का आश्वासन भी दिया।

1 Ballistic Missile Defence Shield

Indian ballistic missile defense program is an initiative to develop and deploy a multi-layered ballistic missile defense that can be nested in every possible missile.

PAD was tested in November 2006, followed by AAD test in December 2007. With the PAD missile test, India has become the fourth country, which successfully developed an anti-ballistic missile system after the United States, Russia and Israel. On March 6, 2009, India again conducted its Missile Defense Shield Test, during which the "enemy" missile was stopped, the height of 75 kilometers.

2 FGFA - Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft

The co-development and production of the Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA), also known in India as the Perspective Multi-role Fighter (PMF), one of the most high profile joint Indo-Russian defense projects remains stuck despite recent comments by a senior Russian official that a final contract may be signed soon.

Sukhoi director Mikhail Pogosyan has projected a market for 1000 aircraft over the next four decades, which will be produced in a joint venture with India, two hundred each for Russia and India and six hundred for other countries.

The Sukhoi/HAL Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) is a fifth-generation fighter being developed by Russia and India. It is a derivative project from the PAK FA (T-50 is the prototype) being developed for the Indian Air Force (FGFA is the official designation for the Indian version).
According to HAL chairman A.K. Baweja shortly after the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Committee meeting on 18 September 2008, the Russian aircraft will be a single-seater, the Indian FGFA will be a twin seater, analogous to the Su-30MKI which is a twin seat variant of the baseline Su-30. Two separate prototypes will be developed, one by Russia (designated the T-50), and a separate one by India (designated FGFA).
Delays were caused by New Delhi and Moscow disagreeing over many fundamental aspects of the joint development project including work and cost share, aircraft technology, as well as the number of aircraft to be ordered. After evaluating the first PAK FA T-50 prototype (the Russian prototype of the PMF), the Indian Air Force (IAF) wanted more than 40 changes addressing, among other things, perceived weaknesses in the plane’s engine, stealth, and weapon-carrying capabilities.India and Russia also failed to agree on the number of aircraft to be produced:
Russia announced in late 2015 that it would only induct a squadron (18-24 aircraft) of PAK FA fighter aircraft, and procure additional Sukhoi Su-35 aircraft instead. The original deal involved Russia procuring 250 and India 144 aircraft at a cost of around $30 billion by 2022. As a result, India threatened to abandon the project in its entirety. Russia in turn made a number of concessions including an offer to cut down its financial contribution from $6 to $ 3.7 billion for three PAK FA T-50 prototypes and substantial technology transfers.
India held out however. Nevertheless, a panel instated by the Indian Ministry of Defense, headed by retired Air Marshal Simhakutty Varthaman, purportedly recommended in August 2017 that the project, despite its high cost, proceed. Frustrated with the delays, the IAF has repeatedly expressed its desire to end collaboration on the joint Indo-Russian stealth fighter project

3 INS Arihant - The Nuclear Submarine

The vessel was first commissioned in October 2016, and is currently the only operating vessel in India that is able to carry nuclear missiles.The INS Arighant, India's second Arihant-class submarine, was launched in November but is currently at trial stage.
The Arihant has four launch tubes that can carry 12 K-15 short-range missiles or K-4 intermediate-range nuclear missiles.
INS Arihant (S-73) is the lead ship of India's Arihant class of nuclear-powered submarines. The 5,000–6,000 tonne vessel was built under the Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) project at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.
The symbolic launch ceremony for the Arihant was held on July 26, 2009 marked the anniversary of Vijay Diwas (Kargil War Victory Day). It was reported that the nuclear reactor and other systems were not included at the time of the submarine's launch. Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said in December 2009, "Work is in progress to make INS Arihant operational for should be inducted in two years or so."
In 2010, the submarine was reported to have begun its sea trials with the submarine to be formally inducted into the Indian Navy by 2011. Full integration of key systems and Sea trials are expected to be extensive. The name of the vessel, Arihant is in Sanskrit and literally translates into destroyer of enemies.
The completion of the INS Arihant will make India one of six countries in the world with the ability to design, build, and operate its own nuclear submarines (the others being the United States, the UK, Russia, France, and China).

4 INS Vikramaditya & IAC 1

INS Vikramaditya is the new name for the former Soviet aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, which has been procured by India. The Vikramaditya is a modified Type 1143 Kiev class aircraft carrier built in 1978-1982 at Black Sea Shipyard, Mykolaiv, Ukraine. The ship is presently being extensively refitted at Sevmash shipyard in Russia. It is projected to replace India's only currently serving aircraft carrier, INS Viraat.
Indian Navy successfully conducted maiden test of short range surface-to-air Barak missile from country’s sole aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

5 IAC-1

The Vikrant class aircraft carriers are the first aircraft carriers of the Indian Navy to be designed and built in India. They are being built by Cochin Shipyard Limited. The Vikrant class carriers will be the largest warships built by CSL. Work on the lead vessel of the class started in 2008, and the keel was laid in February 2009. Eighty percent of works on the carrier will be completed before its launch in 2010. The first carrier of the class was expected to enter service by 2012, but was delayed by a year reportedly due to the inability of Russia to supply the AB/A grade steel. This led to SAIL creating facilities to manufacture the steel in India.In August 2009 the military purchasing publication Defence Industry Daily reported that the in-service date had slipped to at least 2015.

6 Shaurya & Agni V Missiles

Shaurya is a two stage, solid fueled weapon with characteristics of both ballistic and cruise missiles. Unlike conventional cruise missile which cruise at extremely low altitudes and subsonic speeds using turbo fan engines, Shaura cruises at extremely high altitudes at hypersonic speeds using rocket power.
Its first stage lofts it to 40 km. altitude. The second stage is used for cursing towards the target while maneuvering with an aim of rendering interception difficult. During the endgame, the missile guides itself to the target.
DRDO claims the missile is capable of striking within 20-30 metres of its target after travelling 750 kilometres.
Speaking to the press at DefExpo 2010, DRDO Chief VK Sarsawat said, "Like a ballistic missile, it is powered by solid fuel. And, like a cruise missile, it can guide itself right up to the target."

7 Air Launched Brahmos & Hypersonic Brahmos II

Work on the air-launched version of the missile is in the final stages and BrahMos scientists are now waiting for the Su-30MKI aircraft from India to act as a platform for test launch of the missile.
The air-launched version, will be lighter and smaller than the land-based version of the missile so that it can be fitted to the aircraft. One of the two speed boosters in the missile has been removed for the air version of the weapon system as after being launched from an aircraft moving at a speed of more than 1.5 mach, the missile will automatically gain its momentum and maintain its speed of 2.8 mach, the sources said.
After being released from the aircraft, the missile will have a free fall of about 150 metres before getting activated and flying to its target. The range and speed of the missile will remain the same as that of its land and ship-launched versions, they said.
For the integration of the aircraft with the missile, two of IAF Su-30 MKI planes will be used. These aircraft would be the part of the 40 additional Su-30s, for which orders were placed in 2006.
Soon after induction into the IAF, the two aircraft will be sent back to Russia where their airframe will be strengthened to carry the missile in their underbelly, the source said adding, they are expected to be inducted into the operational service of both India and Russia by 2012.


SPYDER is a low-level, quick-reaction, surface-to-air missile (LLQRM) system capable of engaging aircraft, helicopters, unmanned air vehicles, drones and precision-guided munitions. The system provides air defence for fixed assets and for point and area defence for mobile forces in combat areas.
The SPYDER-SR (short range) system has 360° engagement capability and the missiles can be launched from the full-readiness state in less than five seconds post target confirmation. The kill range is specified as being less than 1km to more than 15km. The altitudes range from a minimum of 20m to a maximum of 9,000m. The system is capable of multi-target simultaneous engagement and also single, multiple and ripple firing, by day and night and in all weathers.
Rafael is developing a medium-range version, SPYDER-MR, which has a range over 35km at altitudes from 20m to 16km. SPYDER-MR carries eight missiles while SPYDER-SR has four.
SPYDER-MR also has new IAI/Elta MF-STAR surveillance radar.
The main components of the SPYDER system are the truck-mounted command and control unit, the missile firing unit with Python 5 and Derby missiles, a field service vehicle and missile supply vehicle.
The system can launch missiles in two modes of operation: lock on before launch (LOBL) and lock on after launch (LOAL).
A typical SPYDER squadron consists of one mobile command and control unit (CCU) and four mobile firing units (MFU). The mobile CCU is equipped with a surveillance radar and two operator stations with a radio datalink between the CCU and the four MFUs.
India and Israel agreed to jointly develop a new long range, land-based air defense system to replace the aging Pechora (SA-3 GOA) missiles currently in service with the Indian Air Force.
Covering a range of 70 km, the new missile will almost double the range of the 60km vertically launched Barak 8 shipborne missile (also known as Barak NG) currently being developed for the Indian and Israeli Navies under a US$480 million five year program launched in early 2006.

Being overweight shortens a dog's life expectancy, a new study has found.
Data on a range of popular dog breeds from across the US showed that dogs that are overweight in middle age have a shorter life expectancy than ideal weight dogs.
Specifically, overweight dogs were found to suffer a reduction in life expectancy of up to ten months compared to ideal weight dogs, researchers said.
Being overweight in middle age can have potentially far-reaching consequences for a dog's life span, highlighting the importance of maintaining dogs at a healthy body weight throughout life.
The research examined the impact of body condition score on the life expectancy of a broad range of popular breeds.
"We saw that overweight dogs tend to have a shorter life expectancy. This was particularly pronounced in five breeds - Labrador, Shih Tzu, American Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever and Beagle," said lead scientist Carina Salt, from WALTHAM Centre for Pet Nutrition.
"This is the first reported research of its kind looking specifically at a large number of pet dogs. The findings therefore provide important insights into the risks of being overweight for dogs in the general population," said Salt.
"Being overweight in middle age can have long-term consequences and, depending on breed, mean a reduction in life span of between one and ten months," Salt added.
The research used data on the body condition of male and female neutered dogs aged between 6.5 and 8.5 years from 10 popular breeds.
There were on average 546 dogs per breed and data were collected by veterinarians during consultations across the network of Banfield Pet Hospital locations in the US.
The findings were presented at the WALTHAM International Nutritional Sciences Symposium

भारत के लिए ऐतिहासिक होगा क्योंकि 14 दिसंबर को प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी देश को INS कलवरी समर्पित करने वाले हैं। INS कलवरी को मुंबई में वेस्टर्न नेवी कमांड के एक कार्यक्रम में शामिल किया जाएगा।
आपको बता दें कि यह एक डीजल-इलेक्ट्रिक अटैक वाली पनडुब्बी है जिसे डीसीएनएस (फ्रांसीसी नौसैनिक रक्षा और ऊर्जा कंपनी) द्वारा डिजाइन किया गया है और इसे मुंबई में माज़गन डॉक लिमिटेड में निर्मित किया गया है। आपको बता दें कि यह पनडुब्बी हिंद महासागर में भारत की ताकत को बढ़ाने का काम करेगी।
  • मालूम हो कि हाल ही में 8 दिसंबर को भारतीय नेवी की सबमरीन टुकड़ी ने सिल्वर जुबली मनाई है और यह 17 साल बाद होगा जब भारतीय नेवी को उसकी पारंपरिक पनडुब्बी मिलेगी। इस कार्यक्रम की खास बात ये है कि इस महान आयोजन में भारत की पहली पनडुब्बी के कमांडिंग अफसर 92 वर्षीय कमांडर केएस. सुब्रमण्यम भी शामिल रहेंगे।
INS कलवरी :
अब इसे इत्तफाक कहें या खूबसूरत संयोग कि देश की पहली पनडुब्बी का नाम भी INS कलवरी ही था और उस INS कलवरी के कमांडिंग अफसर इस गौरवान्वित पल के साक्षी बनेंगे।आठ दिसंबर 1967 को आईएनएस कलवरी नौसेना में शामिल हुई थी जिसे लगभग तीन दशकों के बाद 31 मई 1996 को सेवा से हटा दिया गया था।
  • आईएनएस कलवरी में पिछली डीजल-इलेक्ट्रिक पनडुब्बियों की तुलना में बेहतर छुपने वाली प्रौद्योगिकी है। इस पनडुब्बी के माध्यम से टारपीडो के साथ एक हमले शुरू किए जा सकते है। यह उष्णकटिबंधीय समेत सभी सेटिंग्स में काम कर सकती हैं। माइन बिछाने, क्षेत्र निगरानी, खुफिया जानकारी और युद्ध गतिविधियों सहित इस गुप्तता वाली पनडुब्बी के माध्यम से कई रक्षा गतिविधियों का संचालन किया जा सकता है। 

एंटी शिप मिसाइल :
इस पनडुब्बी के माध्यम से पानी की सतह पर या नीचे की सतह से एंटी शिप मिसाइल लॉन्च की जा सकती है, कलवारी को विशेष इस्पात से बनाया गया है. जिससे ये उच्च तीव्रता के हाइड्रोस्टाटिक बल का सामना कर सकती है और महासागरों में गहराई से गोता लगा सकती है।
बढ़ेगी नेवी की ताकत :
खबर है कि जलावतरण के समय एक कमीशनिंग वारंट पढ़ा जाएगा और रंगों को बिखेरा जाएगा, इस मौके पर राष्ट्र गान भी गाया जाएगा। रक्षा मंत्री निर्मला सीतारमण, नौसेना प्रमुख एडमिरल सुनील लांबा, पश्चिम नौसेना कमान के फ्लैग ऑफिसर कमांडिंग वाइस एडिमरल गिरीश लूथरा और शीर्ष अधिकारी इस समारोह में शामिल होंगे।
